Jonathan Treussard on Raising Financially Fit Families Podcast with Joline Godfrey

I recently had a great conversation with Joline Godfrey on her podcast, where we explored what it really means to prepare kids for a life of true abundance—not just in dollars, but in community, curiosity, and resilience.

A few ideas I shared (and continue to wrestle with as a parent myself):

Kids are naturally curious about how the world works—including money.

➔ Honest, age-appropriate conversations about financial matters (the real costs, the ambiguities, the decisions behind them) go a long way.

Complexity isn’t something to be “solved”—it’s something to lean into.

➔ Especially for young women (including my daughters), getting comfortable with big numbers and big questions is a skill worth nurturing.

Life doesn’t play out as a series of photos—it’s a movie.

➔ Choices connect over time. You don’t have to get everything right the first time, but bringing some intentionality to decisions pays off in the long run.

Wealth is about so much more than money.

➔ Social connections, meaningful relationships, and a sense of purpose make up the real balance sheet, especially when the inevitable setbacks happen.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to reflect on these topics, both as an economist and as a dad.

If you’re interested in the broader conversations about wealth—and how families can pass along more than just financial capital—would love to hear your thoughts.
